Players love it when they have a benchmark they can aim for, especially from their favorite NBA players. Great coaches that have had the privilege of coaching NBA players can motivate teams by sharing how professional players do on that drill.
For example, how many shots do top players make a day?
- Steph Curry – 500 off season. 200-350 in season.
- Kyle Korver – 150 game shots.
- Steve Novak – 300 made shots every day.
- Buddy Hield – 300 – 500 made shots every day.
- Tyler Harvey – 350 – 400 made shots every day.
“It’s not a ridiculous number. I count makes, so in the summer, I make 500. During the season, depending on what portion of the schedule we’re going through, I make 200 to 350. And whatever goal I set before the workout is the goal. I won’t shortcut it.” – Steph Curry
Enter the Steph Curry drill. Steph Curry makes it look easy but none of the top guards at this camp could get by the 2nd station.
- Take 3 different shots in this order
- Pick up shot (single hand slap, stationary shot)
- 1 dribble pull up
- Step back 3
- Follow that order of shots, make 5 of 7
- Move to next spot. 5 spots around the 3 point line.
- If you can’t make 5, move back 1 spot.
“I don’t ever shoot a ton of shots at once because I want to shoot them game-like. You can’t shoot 500 shots at the exact speed and exact intensity that you’re going to in a game. Very rarely will I shoot more than 150 shots at once.” – Kyle Korver
Klay Thompson competition shooting
This drill started with the Warriors, got picked up by the Oklahoma Sooners and then later by the North Carolina Tar Heels.
It’s really simple, make as many 3’s as possible before missing 2 in a row.
- Joel Berry II (North Carolina) – 251
- Buddy Hield (Oklahoma Sooners) – 197
- Marcus Paige (North Carolina) – 142
- Klay Thompson – 122
- Steph Curry – 76
Syracuse layup drill – 120 in 4
120 layups in 4 minutes.
- Player line up underneath the basket at both ends of the court. 3 balls.
- 2 players will stand on each side of free throw line on both sides.
- Player passes to teammate at free throw line.
- Gets a return pass then passes to the team mate on the other side of the court.
- Full sprint to other side
- Receive pass and without dribbling, layup
This is a tough drill. 1 missed pass or if you’re not going in full sprint then you won’t make it in time.
